Shining Force 1: No-Exploration Mode (Playable)

Download:
v1.0.1

As a quick comparison, this patch is similar in idea to Stordarth's SF2 Milestone Edition.

Essentially, this patch removes all the world-journeying from the original game and restricts the locale to Guardiana while (eventually, hopefully) allowing mostly everything directly gameplay-related to be done from there. Characters still need to join the Shining Force before they are available and nothing balance-wise pertaining stats and whatnot has been touched.

How-to-play:
1. Max starts in Guardiana and the game proceeds as usual up until the throne room
2. The king now acts as the battle starter: talk to him to be told your current game progress and to be sent into the next battle
3. Exiting any battle (via egress/retreat/death) returns Max directly to Guardiana and the battle must be restarted
4a. Winning the battle by defeating all enemies or the leader also returns Max to Guardiana, but advances the battle number by 1
4b. The "You've reached your destination" win condition is unavailable
5a. Characters join upon completing battles in accordance to the original game's timings
5b. Contents of chests that would have been acquired at that point in time (and up until the next battle starting) are also awarded at the end of battles, including uncollected in-battle chests
5c. Gold is awarded directly, but items have to be collected from the deals shop, albeit for free
5d. There is no limit to the number of different items that can be stored in the deals shop, but the amount per item is restricted to 1 (and items that are available from the regular lineup of the selected shopkeeper do not show up in deals)
6a. HQ&Nova, the priest, and the shops are accessible despite the lack of story event progression
6b. In-game saves work (?)
6c. Shop lineup updates in accordance with the number of battles cleared, following the original game's town access timings

To-do list:
Give out corresponding chest contents after each battle as shop deals
Reduce deal cost to 0 (essentially having deals serve as storage for the above)
Build a more convenient hub with everything (king/priest/shops/Nova) all accessible in one place?

Probably scrapped ideas:
Call Nova/shops at the beginning of battle
Restore the consecutive nature of the last two battles?
Add a battle-select to replay previous battles?

Compatibility issues:

No plan to test it anytime soon, but it sounds (reads) as an amazing feat!

If we ignore the confusion that is editing in assembly, it's actually pretty simple when broken down:
  • Make the king execute arbitrary code instead of giving his usual story-advancing speech
  • Make that code start a battle
  • Make respawning always be in Guardiana
Done! :D

(and make the priest ignore the story-lock, and make the weapon shopkeeper behave, and shove the guard out of the way to HQ)

---

I uploaded a new version that fixes a bug (gold halving even on victories) and implements the rest of the original to-do list (post-battle chests and deals), so it's pretty much complete now, barring potential bug fixes.

This game has battles you can win by simply reaching a destination? Why did it take me over 20 years to learn this?

Personally not really interested, I like the exploring in Shining Force games. It's one of the main reasons I prefer it to other Tactical RPGs, but nonetheless this is interesting and seems like it took a decent amount of work. Props to you my guy.
